One of the most important steps when purchasing a highway vignette is selecting the correct fee category. A vignette purchased for the wrong category may be considered unauthorized road usage, which could result in a penalty payment obligation.

Buy Vignette NowThe data found in your vehicle registration certificate serves as the best guide for determining the correct category. Based on the vehicle type, maximum permissible gross weight, and the number of passengers, it can be clearly determined which fee category your vehicle falls into.
Detailed Fee Categories
D1M – Motorcycles
This category is exclusively for solo motorcycles.
D1 – Passenger Cars
This category includes passenger cars with a maximum permissible gross weight of up to 3.5 tons, designed to carry up to 7 people (including the driver), including most SUV and minivan models.
D2 – Larger Vehicles
This category includes vehicles that do not meet the D1 criteria: passenger cars designed to carry more than 7 people, as well as campers and trucks with a maximum permissible gross weight of up to 3.5 tons.
U – Trailers and Caravans
A separate vignette is required for trailers if the towing vehicle belongs to the D2 or B2 category. (For trailers towed by a D1 category passenger car, usage is free of charge).
Important Note: Buses (B2)
Buses (category B2) are not covered by the e-vignette system. For buses, road usage authorization must be purchased through the HU-GO e-toll system.
Decision Support
In your vehicle registration certificate:
- The J field contains the vehicle class.
- The maximum permissible gross weight and the number of transportable persons are decisive for distinguishing between D1 and D2.
Consequences of Choosing the Wrong Category
If a vignette of the wrong fee category is purchased for a vehicle, a penalty supplement or fine may be imposed during inspection. Always check your registration certificate before every purchase!
