Bus toll 2024

From April 1, 2024, buses (> 3,5t) that previously used vignettes will also switch to a usage-based toll. The changeover is due to an EU obligation.

The regulations on kilometer-based tolls for trucks will then also apply to these vehicles. It is expected that the costs for package tours will increase significantly. It is not yet known what effect the change will have at national level and to what extent bus fares will be affected.

The on-board tool for bus toll collection will be available from April 1, 2024 at OBU.UTDIJ.HU.

The change could also lead to polluting cars and foreign buses, which only use Hungary as a transit country because it is cheap, disappearing from the roads. The time-based e-vignette will be replaced by a handy electronic on-board unit for buses from February. Charges will be based on kilometers driven, emission class and number of axles, with a new element of external costs for air pollution and noise added. The toll will apply to 7,400 kilometers of the road network, including new sections such as the previously toll-free southern section of the M0 freeway.

In addition to fuel costs, the new toll will be a significant cost factor when transporting business travelers and tourists and will be higher per trip than the current vignette toll. Bus travelers will even have the option of buying a so-called "relational ticket" online, which, however, has a number of disadvantages (no deviation from the chosen route, up to five stops, etc.). The on-board unit (OBU) will be more convenient and reliable to use. It is able to automatically collect tolls electronically, avoiding errors and therefore penalties, and also allows for subsequent payment.
