The e-matrica system provides an opportunity to purchase the required road permit for motorway use quickly and easily online.
Among the available options, the national annual vignette is the variant with the longest time-based validity. We have gathered the most important features and advantages of the annual motorway vignette to make your purchase straightforward.
Validity of the Annual Vignette
In total, three main time-based versions can be distinguished: the 10-day vignette (weekly voucher), the monthly vignette, and the annual vignette. The annual option provides the longest period for motorway use. The national annual vignette is valid from January 1 of the given calendar year (in the case of a pre-purchase), or from the exact day of purchase if bought during the year, until January 31 of the following year at 24:00 (midnight).
The national annual vignette is not restricted by region. This means it grants authorization to use all toll-bound motorways and expressways within the Hungarian national borders.

Buy Annual Vignette NowWhy Is the Annual Vignette the Best Choice?
- No Boundaries: The absolute best choice for anyone who uses the nationwide road network regularly throughout the year for business or private travel.
- Predictable Budget: A one-time investment that covers and plans your vehicles' road use fees for a full year in advance.
- Advantages for D2 and U Categories: For vehicles designed to carry more than 7 passengers (minibuses, motorhomes) and their attached trailers (Category U), this option is a highly economical solution under long-term use.
- Complete Spatial Freedom: You do not need to monitor county borders—the national entitlement applies unconditionally to all Hungarian toll sections.
Although the annual vignette represents the largest single upfront expense, it is definitely worth it for drivers who utilize Hungarian motorways and expressways on a regular basis. If you decide to choose this option, please select the appropriate vehicle category before finalizing your purchase.
Who Should Purchase a National Annual E-Vignette?
Selecting the correct vignette type is usually straightforward for experienced drivers. Nevertheless, it is worth running the numbers briefly to see for whom this investment pays off the most.
There is no question: drivers who travel extensively—not just within the borders of a single county, but across the entire country—drive much more economically and relaxed with the national annual vignette. When you consider that covering longer or changing routes would already require six or seven individual county vignettes, opting for the national variant is the clearly better and more comfortable choice.
Another massive advantage of the Hungarian annual vignette lies in saving administrative hassle and protecting yourself from accidental fines. You do not have to constantly keep an eye on the expiration dates of monthly or 10-day vouchers. Similarly, there is no need to worry about accidentally crossing a county line due to a wrong turn for which you do not hold a valid regional vignette.
Replacing Motorway Fines by Purchasing a National Annual Vignette
If you forgot to buy a vignette and consequently received a fine for unauthorized road use, you can be exempted from paying the penalty by retroactively purchasing a national annual vignette. Detailed information regarding the exact fine amounts and deadlines can be found on our Fines and Penalties subpage. The official regulation regarding this exemption states exactly the following:
"Since December 2020, the relevant legislation provides an opportunity for road users who used the country's toll expressway network without an e-vignette and may have incurred a surcharge as a result, to be exempted from paying the imposed surcharge by purchasing a national annual vignette (corresponding to the year of the surcharge). They only need to request it. The cancellation of the surcharge can be initiated by the vehicle operator within 75 days from the date of delivery of the payment notice."
It is important to emphasize that anyone wishing to take advantage of this option must under no circumstances pay the imposed fine in advance, as the exemption can only be applied to unpaid penalties. To replace the fine, the national annual vignette must be newly purchased, and the application must be submitted to the competent authority within the 75-day exclusion period from the receipt of the payment notice.
Corporate Fleets and the Annual Motorway Vignette
When a business owns multiple vehicles traveling across the entire country, special attention must be paid to the seamless validity of road use rights. For corporate fleets, the annual vignette is the safest and most efficient solution.
Even with precise logistics, a monthly or short-term vignette can easily expire unnoticed in the midst of daily stress. The resulting fines can cause substantial costs. For a company fleet, purchasing the annual vignette is recommended because the transaction takes place only once at the beginning of the year (or upon acquiring the vehicle). For the rest of the year, the vehicles can use all motorways, expressways, and their connector sections without risks or restrictions.
Fleet Procurement and Practical Guidance
If a company's fleet is managed by an external fleet manager, they will handle the procurement of the motorway vignettes as well as all related operational tasks upon request. If the purchase of the annual vignettes is conducted in-house, bank transfer can also be chosen as a payment method for multiple vehicles if the daily limits of credit cards are insufficient for the total amount.
When paying by bank transfer, it is essential to note that the validity of the vignette does not begin when the transfer is initiated, but only becomes active after the actual receipt of payment and successful registration in the system. Therefore, the procurement of annual vignettes should be carried out in a timely manner and not postponed until the very end of the official grace period on January 31.
