From January 1, 2026, an e-vignette will be required for all motorhomes in Hungary

From January 1, 2026, the regulation of motorhome road use in Hungary will change significantly. Act LXVII of 2013 on distance-based road tolls for the use of motorways, highways and main roads will be amended, as a result of which motorhomes with a maximum permissible gross weight exceeding 3.5 tons will also be included in the time-based toll (e-vignette) system.

The most important change in short

  • From January 1, 2026, an e-vignette must be purchased for all motorhomes if they intend to use the Hungarian road network subject to e-vignette tolls, regardless of the vehicle’s weight.

HU-GO electronic toll: discontinued for motorhomes

As a result of the change, from January 1, 2026, it will no longer be possible to pay road usage fees for motorhomes over 3.5 tons that previously belonged to the HU-GO electronic toll system:

  • neither as a registered user using an on-board unit,
  • nor by purchasing a route ticket without registration.

Motorhomes may therefore use toll roads exclusively with an e-vignette.

D1 or D2 toll category? This is how it is determined

In the case of motorhomes, the e-vignette toll category must always be determined based on the vehicle registration certificate (or other official vehicle documents). The following fields must be considered together during classification:

  • J – vehicle category
  • F.1 – maximum permissible gross weight
  • S.1 – number of seats including the driver / number of persons that may be transported

Examples of toll categories

D1 toll category

The D1 toll category includes any motorhome with a maximum permissible gross weight of up to 3.5 tons, marked as M1 in field “J”, and with a maximum of 7 seats (including the driver) indicated in field “S.1”.

D2 toll category

  • M1-category motorhomes where the number of transportable persons exceeds 7, regardless of vehicle weight;
  • as well as M1-category motorhomes whose maximum permissible gross weight exceeds 3.5 tons, also regardless of the number of persons.

To select the correct toll category, a dedicated motorhome toll category guide is available, providing comprehensive and reliable information for all scenarios.
